Could the government be breaking the law? i watched the opening of the senate last night and the chaplain of the senate open with a prayer asking God to guide the senators, i went back and read the constitution and i found nothing in it about God and a supreme being, what i found was to swear or affirm or affirmation and that congress shell make no laws for or against religion, we say we are a melting pot, we say their are all kinds of people who believe all kinds of things but our government and the leaders we put in office in Washington make laws on their religionous beliefs, their was one senator who said he would not vote for a bill until the catholic bishops have a chance to read the bill, i believe that" that was unconstitutional, so the question i must ask? are we a secular nation and have we been breaking the law, or are we hypocrites, this one i can answer, ( YES)

EVERY TIME YOU BUY A WAL MART PRODUCT 10 JOBS ARE LOST FOREVER.
The right wing republicans are crying about having a black president, we want our country back, they have called the president everything under the sun, and he was not the one who sold America, the last five president started selling America, Reagan, Clinton, Bush 1, Nixon and Bush 2, and now Obama, their was a seed on news vine last night which showed all the American companies who packed up and moved to foreign countries where they can pay slave wages, all with the blessing of our government, the most egregious one of all was Bush 2, Clinton started it and Bush took it all the way with free trade, some of our biggest manufacturers RCA, RUBBER MAID, ( WHICH WAS FORCED TO MOVE TO CHINA BY WAL MART), GM, FORD, you name it and it's gone overseas, even the bail out money we gave wall street, how do we think we are going to survive when we don't have a manufacturing base, we buy everything we use from other countries, and the republicans want to take back the country from the black president, when all of us should rebel against companies who leave the country for bigger profits at American expense, big business and corporation will tell you they are true patriot, but what they are really saying is they are true patriot to the bottom line and the hell with the country.

I watch the hearing of the oversight@ government reform committee and their was two professors who testified about the bail out, and professor William Black explain the problem that we are having with our treasury secretary Gaithner which i have said from the start, this man is is not working for main street and all the people of America, Mr black said that Mr Gaithner is the problem, he came from wall street and he was the one who helped them to rob America, with all of those bad loans, Mr Gaithner have given the president some bad advice and he is suppose to be the thinker, what was he thinking when let the wall street barons come into the white house to make policy's for wall street, Mr Gaithner new all about the bonus that wall street was going to give to those employees and that he paid 100% on the dollar for all of those bad loans that was made, so who did that benefited? wall street not the American people, their was a woman on Bill Moyers last week who predicted that wall street was going to fail because of the fraud that was going on, but they forced her out and did not want to hear what she had to say, and who was at the top of the pushing Paulson and Gaithner and Summers and the man who stop the regulation senator Graham. VULGAR AND VILE RUSH LIMBAUGH

Limbaugh wants the country to go back to segregation, he wants blacks in one section and whites in another section because their was a fight on a school bus, a black kid fought with a white kid and president Obama put them up to that, Rush is a dangerous man to the country and some one should put a stop to his hateful speech, the conservatives are hell bent on destroying the president because they think he is not suppose to be in the house that they built, for over 200 years blacks were in slaved and helped build this country with know reparation for their work, but the Japanese was interned for a few years and they got reparation within a few years after they were freed, and we are still looking for justice and reparation.
THIS IS A BRIEF HISTORY OF WHAT BLACKS HAVE GONE THOUGH FROM THE NATION WEBSITE.

Congress passed the Alien and Sedition Acts in 1798. These four acts of Congress were meant to protect the new nation from French immigrants. They reflected a broad paranoia that French newcomers would poison American minds and weaken the new American government.
By 1802 President Thomas Jefferson led the repeal of most of these acts because they overstepped federal authority and instituted unjust restrictions.
In 1845 the Know Nothing movement in the United States formed a national political party based in nativity sentiment. This "Native American Party" rested on populist fears of Irish immigration. The Irish, they argued, were streaming into the United States. The Know Nothings argued that these Irish were unwelcome labor competition, and that these new immigrants were bringing with them foreign values, specifically Catholicism, which were a threat to American values.
By 1860 this party was extinguished.
In 1882 President Arthur signed into federal law the Chinese Exclusion Act. Chinese immigrant labor was the infrastructure backbone of the 19th century California Gold Rush, but by the 1880s a significant economic downturn increased competition and turned up animosity. Fueled by scarcity-stoked fear, nativists pushed an anti-immigration agenda, culminating in the 1882 Act that excluded Chinese workers from entering the United States.
In 1943 this act was repealed.
In the 1880s Reconstruction ended in the U.S. South. States of the former Confederacy began to enact legislation that stripped black citizens of the right to vote, ejected black office holders from their posts, and forcibly segregated public accommodations and public transportation. Architects of these Jim Crow Laws justified the exclusion of black Americans from the public sphere as a protection of the values and culture of Southern life.
In 1964 the Civil Rights Act ended segregation in public accommodations.
In 1890 the state of Wisconsin passed the Bennett Law and the state of Illinois passed the Edwards law. Both restricted the use of German-language instruction in the state's classrooms. These were antagonist legislative acts meant to cripple the extensive German parochial school system in these states. Many believed German immigrants to be a threat to American values and political interests.
In 1892 both laws were repealed.
In 1942 the United States began the forcible internment of more than 100,000 Japanese nationals, more than half of whom were American citizens. The "War Relocation Camps" were justified as a protective measure for American interests in the wake of Peal Harbor.
In 1945 the internment camps were closed and in 1948 reparations were made to many of the survivors.
In 2008 the United States of America elected its first black president. He is the son of a white woman from Kansas and a black man from Kenya. He was born in an American state with a sizable Japanese-American population. He went to grade school in Indonesia. He chose a Catholic man as his running mate. In the general election he won Virgina, a state that was once the capital of the Confederacy.
In 2009 he worked with Congress to craft legislation aimed at providing affordable health insurance coverage to all. While addressing a joint session of Congress he was called a liar by a Representative from South Carolina. Those who opposed his policies decried him as a socialist, a Nazi, a bigot and a murderer. They suggested that his ideas were dangerous and threatened the values of the United States.
We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics who will only grow louder and more dissonant in the weeks to come. We've been asked to pause for a reality check. We've been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope.
But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope. For when we have faced down impossible odds; when we've been told that we're not ready, or that we shouldn't try, or that we can't, generations of Americans have responded with a simple creed that sums up the spirit of a people.
Yes we can.
It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation.
Yes we can.
It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail toward freedom through the darkest of nights.
Yes we can.
It was sung by immigrants as they struck out from distant shores and pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness.
Yes we can.
It was the call of workers who organized; women who reached for the ballot; a President who chose the moon as our new frontier; and a King who took us to the mountaintop and pointed the way to the Promised Land.
Yes we can to justice and equality. Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity. Yes we can heal this nation. Yes we can repair this world. Yes we can.

WHITE IN AMERICA

Who are these people?! Where do they come from?! Ordinary Americans might wonder why anyone would stoop so low as to follow Glenn Beck, Fox News and Dick Armey (and their corporate sponsors masquerading as "FreedomWorks") as they organize their "9/12 March On Washington" to cynically exploit the 9/11 attack.
Patriotic Americans might question the organizer's aim to provide a media forum for dimwitted right wingers to scream "Liar!" "Socialist!" "Antichrist!" "Muslim!" "Death Panels!" "He's not an American!" and so on and on and on about the commander in chief charged with defending us from further attacks. And some people might even cry "shame on you!" to the more mainstream Republicans participating that include Dick Armey of FreedomWorks, as well as GOP Reps. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Mike Pence of Indiana, Tom Price of Georgia, and South Carolina GOP Sen. Jim DeMint.
Ordinary folks from Planet Earth may ask why the Republican Party, right-wing activists and members of the Religious Right seem so unreachable with mere facts let alone decency and decorum. (As the proud father of a US Marine who fought in Afghanistan, I'm particularly outraged that these people would exploit the 9/11 attacks after my son and others were prepared to give their lives in response to our enemies.)
As a former Religious Right leader, who was raised (and home-schooled by my Evangelical-leader parents, Francis and Edith Schaeffer) in the movement, let me explain just why the ordinary rules of decency don't apply to the right these days.
Let me also answer this question: Who are these people?
Protecting Your Children From Satan
A big part of the answer to understanding the heightened climate of outright hate and fear of the "other" is the home school and Christian school movement. It is a modern incarnation of the anti-federal government ideology of earlier firebrands such as John Calhoun who was the 7th Vice President and a Southern politician in the 19th century. Calhoun embraced slavery, states' rights, limited government, and said that Americans should secede from the union if it went against their wishes. (See: "Calhoun Conservatism Raises Its Ugly Head" by Mike Lux in the Huffington Post Sept 11/09.)
In the early 1970s the evangelicals like my late father and James Dobson decided that the our society had fallen so far "away from God" and so far from "America's Christian history" that it was time to metaphorically decamp to not just another country but to another planet:. In other words virtually unnoticed by the media and mainstream political operatives, a big chunk of American society seceded from the union in all but name.
What they did is turn the white race-based in "Christian school" movement of the 1950s into a countercultural phenomena. As tens of thousands of new Christian schools opened, it was no longer just about "protecting" white kids from minorities and African-Americans. It was about protecting your children from Satan in other words the United States government's long reach through the public school system.
To protect your children from Satan -- in other words mainstream, open patriotic and pluralistic America -- you either kept them at home where mom and dad could teach the children right from wrong or sent them to a cloistered private evangelical/fundamentalist school. At home or in school you used curriculum prepared by the likes of James--beat-your-child-and-dare-to-discipline-Dobson, RJ-slavery-was-a-good-thing-Rushdoony, or many and other right-wing anti-American activists. That curriculum presented "secular America" as downright evil. Hating the USA became next to godliness.
The Anti-American Home Schoolers Come Of Age
We are now several generations into this experiment of holier-than-thou withdrawal from our American mainstream culture. If you wonder who it is that's both running and underwriting organizations such as the Family Research Council, Focus On The Family, Freedom Works and other organizers of the 9/12 March and who are the most faithful followers the likes of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh or viewers of Fox News your answer is: it's the home school/Christian school generation of men and women now hitting their thirties and even forties who might as well have been raised on a different planet.
What are these home school and Christian school children taught? Here's a quote from one of the far right's leading home school curricula creators:
"The political question is this: By what biblical standard is the pagan to be granted the right to bring political sanctions against God's people? We recognize that unbelievers are not to vote in Church elections. Why should they be allowed to vote in civil elections in a covenanted Christian nation? Which judicial standards will they impose? By what other standard than the Bible?"

The generation raised on the belief that the US government is illegitimate because it is trying to "impose" non-biblical laws on people has hit the streets. These are the people who grew up indoctrinated into an alternative reality. Today they are out there waving signs of Obama dressed as Hitler. They are buying weapons and ammunition. Some are in the growing and revived militia movement. They are Dick Armey's foot soldiers. People like Armey and Beck can count on the ignorance of their dupes. It's against their religion to read a real newspaper, watch anything but Fox or go to a real school.
Evangelical Red Guards
Over the last 30 years Evangelical fundamentalists have managed to do what Chairman Mao failed to do with his Red Guards: indoctrinate a whole generation of evangelical people to see their own society as the enemy and act like subversives from within the culture. These people are as anti-American as Al-Qaeda. The "Christian Reconstruction" movement is working for theocracy. Reconstructionism (of which Gary North is one leader) says that the law given for the political and legal ordering of ancient Israel is intended for all people at all times.
Reconstructionist leader David Barton gives a definition:
"The Christian goal for the world is the universal development of Biblical theocratic republics, in which every area of life is redeemed and placed under the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the rule of God's law."
Who are Glenn Beck's foot soldiers? In effect what we have is a group of indoctrinated people who have never actually lived in America because they were brought up deliberately cloistered from it by their parents and churches. Because they are legally "Americans" they can move freely around our democracy trying to destroy it working within the United States. Today they are acting like a fifth column, no, they are a fifth column. Some of them have not just seceded metaphorically, there is even a growing movement for states to secede literally.
Today the right wing America haters actually are doing to America what no "illegal" immigrants ever do: work to overthrow our democracy and replace it with a theocracy. The home-schooled, privately educated brainwashed horde are an antidemocratic, fundamentally anti-American political movement. For a start they do not accept the results of the last election.
Liberal/Progressive Wishful Thinking and Blindness
Meanwhile those ordinary Americans including many Democrats, progressives and liberals who work within the system can hardly imagine that there are people so far outside the lines of what they regard as ordinary decent behavior that the progressives seem psychologically unequipped to deal with this reality.
President Obama is one such person. His talk of bipartisanship is a pipe dream. Why?
Bipartisan Pipe Dream
Because you can't be bipartisan with people who don't play by the same rules -- say accepting the will of the people -- as you do. Obama is not alone in his gentlemanly wishful thinking. For instance consider New York Times book review editor Sam Tanenhaus saying in his book (The Death of Conservatism) that the the conservative movement is over.
Tanenhaus rightly points out that the extremism of the right has driven away traditional Republicans. I ought to know! I, as a life-long Republican and former Religious Right activist helped create this situation. But Tanenhaus and others like him just don't get the fact that the far right is resurgent, in fact more dangerous than ever as a wounded animal is dangerous. They don't get it because kindly liberals also live in a bubble.
The kindly liberal reasonable bubble of an open free culture in which reason, argument in fact prevails is far removed from the other America, one of militia training camps, fundamentalist churches, parents who follow Dobson's "parenting" advice by "breaking" their children and whipping them (as Dobson tells them to do in his books) and thus raising the damaged and dangerous automatons of biblical vengeance and sadism.
The Last Chess Game You'll Ever Play
What reasonable people don't understand is this: if one person is playing chess abiding by the rules and their opponent is losing at the chess game it may appear that they have lost the match. But what if one person is willing to change the rules? For instance, if you're playing chess against someone who -- if they start losing -- takes a lead pipe out of their back pocket and smashes you over the head with it the "rules" change.
Serial Killers
The real story of the Religious Right and their power to destroy is told by Max Blumenthal in Republican Gomorrah, and Jeff Sharlet in The Family and by me in Crazy For God. What our books have in common is the understanding that you can lose in the political system but still "win" -- according to your destructive agenda -- if your agenda is non-political but rather religious and apocalyptic in nature.
To understand the Religious Right today and how dangerous they are don't think politics -- think serial killers who "win" by "getting even" with the society they perceive as having disrespected them. It isn't about facts. It isn't about election results. It isn't about truth. It's about victimhood and revenge on the "elite" in other words on everyone not like you. It is about the weird combination of sadism and masochism Blumenthal describes in his book.
Think Republicans who have no plan of their own for health care reform other than stopping Obama. Think "Deathers" and "Birthers" who are all about de-legitimizing our system as "evil" because it includes rights for gays.
New Rules: Anarchy and Scorched Earth
What those who think that the power of the Religious Right and/or the Republicans is ended don't understand is that it's only ended if you believe in the rules. When I say the rules I mean, for instance, that if you lose an election the other side gets to legislate. However if your opponent is not interested in the rules and is, A) waiting for Jesus to return and consume all the "infidels" or, B) you are just waiting to take that "lead pipe" out of your back pocket -- say go to public meetings and intimidate people by carrying loaded weapons to those meetings -- or worse, maybe even use them to shoot down someone -- all polite bets are off!
The fact of the matter is we now know what the experiment in raising children outside of the American mainstream means. It means that there's a whole subculture within American culture that mistrusts facts precisely because they are facts. They glory an alternative view of not just politics but of reality.
They frequent the creationist museum and look at dioramas of dinosaurs cavorting with humans. They believe that gay people choose to be gay just stick it to the rest of us and could change if they invite Jesus into their hearts. They believe that before you run for governor of Alaska, for instance, you should get a preacher specializing in "casting out the spirit of witchcraft" to anoint you so you can win against the demonic forces of secularism -- as was the case with Sarah Palin when she first ran for governor. They believe that the NRA was telling the truth when they claimed that Obama would "take away your guns" and so have loaded up with more guns and ammunition. They think the time has come to rise up and overthrow the government. And yes, most of them also believe that black people are inferior to whites, so to have a black man in the White House is itself "proof" of American's fall from grace.
There's no arguing with such people and no winning against them using mere elections. They are not playing by American rules. Their idea of winning is not fair elections but Armageddon.
Religious Right Growing Again
Those who say that the Religious Right and the far right have lost their power are looking through the lens of rule-obeying democratic liberalism. They don't understand that their opponents will always carry the proverbial lead pipe in his or her back pocket. To the progressives who think that the Religious Right and the right wing has lost its power I say this: You're correct when it comes to political facts (for the moment) of the last election, but you're dead wrong when it comes to the way revolutions work.
Second American "Tea Party" Revolution
Revolutionaries never have played by the rules. They don't have to win by the rules. They hate the rules. They don't live in a rule based or fact based universe.
They believe they are serving a "higher cause" so it makes the "mere human" rules unimportant. They're ready to shout down opponents, call out "liar" about someone telling the truth, undermine public meetings and/or commit physical violence. They are also willing to become the tools of cynical corporate lobbyists using them for ulterior purposes, say stalling health care reform.
In order to "win" -- in other words destroy our country as we know it -- the far right merely needs to be true to its own rule which is, to put it very mildly, that coloring outside the lines is not only perfectly okay but required.
Conclusion
Not only do the Religious Right distrust facts to them facts are evil. You are "satanic" if you believe in evolution. You're also satanic if you believe health-care reform is about anything but death panels and abortions. You're satanic if you don't believe that gay people are evil or if you think sex education is sensible. You're satanic if you don't believe in Satan!
The tactics that progressives develop for actually winning against the right have to involve far more than politics. They have to also involve ceaseless vigilance against an enemy that has now -- literally -- raised up an armed, paranoid and deluded alternative nation within our borders and created a fifth column to undermine the United States and our democracy. They need to be called out by the rest of us in no uncertain terms.
Long term the Religious Right subculture has to be understood, then exposed for what it is: an anti-democracy movement built on willful lies with potentially violent underpinnings in the thrall of an apocalyptic cult of revenge on everyone not like "us." It is also the useful tool of corporate lobbyists. Who use these shock troops of the proudly ignorant for non-ideological reasons.
The Religious Right may have lost a round politically but they've still got a "lead pipe" in their back pocket. They can still "win" by making the rest of us lose our democracy by increments. They will even spit in the rest of our faces by exploiting the national tragedy of 9/11 in their 9/12 "Tea Party" march.

HEALTH CARE RACISM AND AMERICA

This debate is not about health care or what the American people want and every body knows that, What we have now is people who don't want the president to rebuild America, because if he does they lose, all the lies they have told their children will come to light, the racist and bigots and the republican christen right will have exposed themselves to the bigotry and hate they have been caring around for years, they have told their children that blacks and others or not equal to them and for them to look down upon all others who don't look like them, they have instilled in their children to believe that they are superior to all others and the hate begins, and America lose we lose because the world is watching how we are acting toward our president and the disrespect they are showing to our president, other countries see we are hypocrites and that we don't believe in the constitution, they have seen the last president lie and break laws in the name of God, just like them, America have changed and those 10% who want to live in the past will be their for ever fighting for Jim crow laws and slavery, president Obama said he wanted to change the country but the money changers that control the power in Washington is making it difficult for him to do that,40 republican senators and some congress people on bought sides don't want to see the president to succeed so they are doing everything they can to destroy him and the country while the world watch and see the hypocrisy that we have been trying to force on them, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, what we are really saying to the world is the Caucasians states of the world and money rule not the people, those of you who believe the Becks and the Limbaugh and the Hannity's of the world will not stop the changes that are coming to America.

They continually want more, with little thought for saving or investing.They would rather buy some new sneaker than invest in start a business. Some even neglect their children to have the latest Tommy or FUBU, And they still think that having a Mercedes, and a big house gives them"Status" or that they have achieved their Dream..They are fools! The vast majority of their people are still in poverty because their greed holds them back from collectively making better communities.With the help of BET, and the rest of their black media that often broadcast destructive images into their own homes, we will continue to see huge profits like those of Tommy and Nike. (Tommy Hilfiger has even jeered them, saying he doesn't want their money, and look at how the fools spend more with him than ever before!). They'll continue to show off to each other while we build solid communities with the profits from our businesses that we market to them.SELFISHNESS, ingrained in their minds through slavery, is one of the major ways we can continue to contain them. One of their own, Dubois said that there was an innate division in their culture. A "Talented Tenth" he called it. He was correct in his deduction that there are segments of their culture that has achieved some "form" of success.However, that segment missed the fullness of his work. They didn't read that the "Talented Tenth" was then responsible to aid The Non-Talented Ninety Percent in achieving a better life. Instead, that segment has created another class, a Buppie class that looks down on their people or aids them in a condescending manner. They will never achieve what we have. Their selfishness does not allow them to be able to work together on any project or endeavor of substance. When they do get together, their selfishness lets their egos get in the way of their goal. Their so-called help organization seem to only want to promote their name without making any real change in their community..They are content to sit in conferences and conventions in our hotels,and talk about what they will do, while they award plaques to the best speakers, not to the best doers. Is there no end to their selfishness?They steadfastly refuse to see that TOGETHER EACH ACHIEVES MORE (TEAM)They do not understand that they are no better than each other because of what they own, as a matter of fact, most of those Buppies are but one or two pay checks away from poverty. All of which is under the control of our pens in our offices and our rooms.Yes, we will continue to contain them as long as they refuse to read,continue to buy anything they want, and keep thinking they are "helping" their communities by paying dues to organizations which do little other than hold lavish conventions in our hotels. ENHANCE INTERROGATION OR TORTURE

This is something i must say,Cheney left a good legal war for a war of choice, none of us are talking about the real crime, over 4000 of our young people have died in a war that was waged on a lie, the most dangerous man in America is trying to defend all of the lies that were told to us and on our behalf i could not believe that i live in America, high crimes was committed and this was and is a treasonous crime committed by the Cheney and Bush administration which we are not talking about, what Cheney want American to believe is that they kept us safe , where were they when they got that memo in Aug.2001, Ben Laden determined to strike in the united states, we know where Bush was, he was in Crawford cutting wood, who knows where president Cheney was, this man is out their undermining the country with the lies that he is telling the people, he have admitted that he broke the law and was proud of it and he would do that again, he told us that the constitution dose not apply to the president and the vice president in a time of war, he said that the president could make laws and over look the constitution, a law that have been on the books for over a hundred years and a law that we have prosecuted as war crime was legal according to the justice department lawyer and the crime was torture, but that is not the problem, what was done is that Cheney and Bush fabricated intelligence in order for us to go to war with a nation who had nothing to do with 9-11, this was a war of choice a flex of muscles, i believe that the war was a holly war, we were doing what our enemies was doing and, fear took over the fear mongers, all we herd was that the republican are the party of morals and principals, but when it comes to human rights and torture we are American and that dose not apply to us, we can do that because we have a moral right to do these things our principals are above reproach,how can we live with ourselves, the only way we can have good government is to get involved, let these leaders know we are watching.

I write this blog with a heavy heart,our president speaks of the rule of law and the constitution, and he is disregarding both, for political convenient, vice president Cheney have thrown down the gauntlet, he told America that he broke the law and through the constitution out the window, and he told the president you can't do a damn thing about it, and this is what the president said, i have know interest in litigating the past, laws were broken and the Constitution was disregarded, so be it, what the president is doing is for political reason, today vice president Cheney introduced fear back into the political arena, and the democratic party have folded like a deflated balloon, the speaker Mrs Pelosi have been called a liar and she should resign her post, she is the speaker of the house and she act like the republican are still in charge, and to think for the first time i gave money to a campaign i was wrong, our president was a constitutional law professor but he want to forget about the Constitution and the law

Mrs. Huffington, the American Public has been Hoodwinked, bamboozled with the help of the treasury department and Mr. Geithner.A.I.G. asked last week for a way to give out bonus' and Mr. Geithner supplied him with one, back track it to 2008. Say that it was given out last year, we have give A.I.G. 170 billion dollars in bail-out money and Mr. Geithner did not check the books before we started to give them money... (Something is WRONG) Mr. Geithner came from Wall Street and people said that he was the only one who could fix the problem... He helped to create, (Hockey-Putt) 454 million dollars in bonus' to the people who cause the failure of the company, (Bamboozled) this is a way for Mr. Libby to give out those bonus'. Mrs. Huffington please investigate this and I am sure you will find that these bonus' or what they were asking for.

FIRST FEMALE SOLDIERS KILLED IN IRAQ

With each new revelation on U.S. torture in Iraq, Afghanistan and Gitmo (and who, knows, probably elsewhere), I am reminded of the chilling story of Alyssa Peterson, who I have written about numerous times in the past three years but now with especially sad relevance. Appalled when ordered to take part in interrogations that, no doubt, involved what we would call torture, she refused, then killed herself a few days later, in September 2003.
Of course, we now know from the torture memos and the U.S. Senate committee probe and various new press reports, that the "Gitmo-izing" of Iraq was happening just at the time Alyssa got swept up in it.
Alyssa Peterson was one of the first female soldiers killed in Iraq. A cover-up, naturally, followed.
Peterson, 27, a Flagstaff, Ariz., native, served with C Company, 311th Military Intelligence BN, 101st Airborne. Peterson was an Arabic-speaking interrogator assigned to the prison at our air base in troubled Tal Afar in northwestern Iraq. According to official records, she died on Sept. 15, 2003, from a "non-hostile weapons discharge."
A "non-hostile weapons discharge" leading to death is not unusual in Iraq, often quite accidental, so this one apparently raised few eyebrows. The Arizona Republic, three days after her death, reported that Army officials "said that a number of possible scenarios are being considered, including Peterson's own weapon discharging, the weapon of another soldier discharging, or the accidental shooting of Peterson by an Iraqi civilian." And that might have ended it right there.
But in this case, a longtime radio and newspaper reporter named Kevin Elston, not satisfied with the public story, decided to probe deeper in 2005, "just on a hunch," he told me in late 2006 (there's a chapter about it in my book on Iraq and the media, So Wrong for So Long). He made "hundreds of phone calls" to the military and couldn't get anywhere, so he filed a Freedom of Information Act [FOIA] request. When the documents of the official investigation of her death arrived, they contained bombshell revelations. Here's what the Flagstaff public radio station, KNAU, where Elston worked, reported:
"Peterson objected to the interrogation techniques used on prisoners. She refused to participate after only two nights working in the unit known as the cage. Army spokespersons for her unit have refused to describe the interrogation techniques Alyssa objected to. They say all records of those techniques have now been destroyed."
The official probe of her death would later note that earlier she had been "reprimanded" for showing "empathy" for the prisoners. One of the most moving parts of the report, in fact, is this: "She said that she did not know how to be two people; she ... could not be one person in the cage and another outside the wire."
She was then assigned to the base gate, where she monitored Iraqi guards, and sent to suicide prevention training. "But on the night of September 15th, 2003, Army investigators concluded she shot and killed herself with her service rifle," the documents disclose.
The official report revealed that a notebook she had written in was found next to her body, but blacked out its contents.
The Army talked to some of Peterson's colleagues. Asked to summarize their comments, Elston told me: "The reactions to the suicide were that she was having a difficult time separating her personal feelings from her professional duties. That was the consistent point in the testimonies, that she objected to the interrogation techniques, without describing what those techniques were."
Elston said that the documents also refer to a suicide note found on her body, which suggested that she found it ironic that suicide prevention training had taught her how to commit suicide. He filed another FOIA request for a copy of the actual note. It did not emerge.
Peterson, a devout Mormon, had graduated from Flagstaff High School and earned a psychology degree from Northern Arizona University on a military scholarship. She was trained in interrogation techniques at Fort Huachuca in Arizona, and was sent to the Middle East in 2003.
A report in The Arizona Daily Sun of Flagstaff -- three years after Alyssa's death -- revealed that Spc. Peterson's mother, Bobbi Peterson, reached at her home in northern Arizona, said that neither she nor her husband Richard had received any official documents that contained information outlined in Elston's report.
In other words: Like the press and the public, even the parents had been kept in the dark.
Tomorrow I will write about Kayla Williams, a woman who served with Alyssa, who told me me that she talked to her about her problems shortly before she killed herself. Kayla also was forced to take part in torture interrogations, where she saw detainees punched. Another favorite technique: strip the prisoners and then remove their blindfolds so that the first thing they saw was Kayla Williams. She also opted out, but survived, and is haunted years later.
Here's what Williams told Soledad O'Brien of CNN : "I was asked to assist. And what I saw was that individuals who were doing interrogations had slipped over a line and were really doing things that were inappropriate. There were prisoners that were burned with lit cigarettes."
All of this only gains relevance in light of the current debate over whether those who were "just following orders" in torture routines should be held accountable today.

What kind of fucking country do you live in where you have to debate whether torturing someone is a crime? What kind of country do you live in when you can spend 3 years prosecuting the President for a consensual sexual act but won’t prosecute a President for authorizing illegal wiretaps and torturing people? What kind of country do you live in where the supposed ’spiritual’ and ‘religious’ leaders think it’s OK to torture non-Christians? What kind of country do you live in where you can’t even use the word ‘torture’ but have to say ‘interrogation techniques’? What kind of country do you live in when their Nuremberg defense (’We were just following orders’) becomes the mantra for not holding war criminals accountable for their actions? What kind of country do you live in where a major candidate in a Presidential primary openly advocates for doubling the size of America’s illegal detention centers and increasing the use of torture?
Obama, you won the fucking election. Everyone despises Bush and his administration — they spent 8 years spitting on international law, good sense, and common decency. Fucking prosecute them. God damnit.

Peggy Noonan And A "Great Nation"
"The Democrats had long labeled the impeachment debate a distraction from the urgent business of a great nation. But the Republicans argued that the pursuit of justice is the business of a great nation. In winning this point, they caught the falling flag, producing a triumph for the rule of law, a reassertion of the belief that no man is above it, and a rebuke for an arrogance that had grown imperial," - Peggy Noonan, December 21. 1998."It’s hard for me to look at a great nation issuing these documents and sending them out to the world and thinking, ‘Oh, much good will come of that.’ Sometimes in life you want to keep walking… Some of life has to be mysterious." - Peggy Noonan, April 19, 2009.
Remember also that the issue with Clinton was perjury in a civil suit. That required impeachment. But war crimes?

When Rev. wright said that the chicken have come home to roust, the fire hit the fan, he is UN AMERICAN, he dose not love this country, Rev Wright was vilified as not been a patriot, they accused him of been a radical, this came from the right, a man of god was speaking the truth, some body on the right should have applauded him for speaking the truth, but what they did was to vilify him.( hypocrites), Carl Rove accused the president of trying to turn America into a banana republic, the Bush let seven of our military soldiers go to prison for following orders that came from the office of the president, ( HYPOCRISY), THE CHICKEN HAVE COME HOME TO ROUST, the beginning of the cover up has started this is what our government did with ABA Grid, Rumsfled said that it was just a few bad apples, i new that those soldiers did not act on their own and congress new that to, now it's time for those soldiers to be set free, and be paid well for their time that they spent in jail, and given a discharge with no stain on it and their record, call or write or e mail your senator and congress person tell them to let those troops go, tell them to act, and act now.

Why are the republican party of morals and beliefs and principals trying to excuse war crimes, if American dose not believe that the republican or hypocrites something is wrong with us, we prosecuted the Japanese for water boarding our troops, and now the republican or saying it's all right now because we meant no harm, we or American we can break the law, we can invade another country for know good reason or threat to us, we locked up people without cause like we did with the Japanese, the party of morals or showing their true colors, they or showing America that they are speaking out of bought side of their mouth, the Bush administration new exactly what they were doing, Cheney and Rumsfeld and the rest of the neocon in his administration started to devolved how to torture eight months before they told the justice department to draft some laws to cover their ass, this is why other countries don't trust America, now the republican are trying to tell us that they did not know that water boarding was a war crime and they thought we were going to be attacked again, this is the way they have ruled, fear and hate, keep you afraid and make you think that your neighbor is out to get you, the more i listen to the republican and read history the republican remind me of some one else, who used fear and hate to rule.
